Intern Day

Mackenzie and Perlo Construction recently co-hosted our annual “Intern Day.” Students completing summer internships at our firms spent nearly six hours together learning how our companies do what we do.

It was a day of megaphones, hard hats, powdered donuts, spray-applied-fire-resistive material, coffee, pizza and spatial design principles.

If you guessed those things add up to a design-charette, you’re pretty close! It was Mackenzie and Perlo Construction’s annual “Intern Day.”

Students completing internships at our respective companies spent nearly six hours together touring an office building under construction and learning what the day-to-day looks like for experienced design and construction professionals.

We started by touring Perlo’s office (which Mackenzie designed!), visiting a project under construction that Mackenzie and Perlo are working on together, and then finished the day at Mackenzie’s office with lunch, a tour of the office, and a presentation about career pathways in our respective industries.

Mackenzie brings in interns each summer and during the school year as class schedules allow, letting them experience true hands-on design work in a multi-discipline setting.

Students are integrated into the design process and work on a variety of project types and sizes. They gain real-world experience. Because Mackenzie is a multi-discipline firm, the intern will also gain experience working with different disciplines such as interior designers, structural engineers, land use planners, landscape architecture and civil engineers.

Typical work experience for an intern includes attending project site visits and client meetings, assisting with construction documentation, supporting project-related graphic needs, attending Mackenzie office events and more. The position requires the ability to work concurrently on multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced and collaborative work environment.

These opportunities allow students to work on a wide variety of projects currently in design; apply classroom-learned topics to real-world situations; validate their chosen career direction; experience hands on mentorship; and attend Mackenzie’s in-house training programs.

Internships are paid positions, and the schedule is flexible with availability for up to 40 hours per week.

The mission of Mackenzie's internship program is simple: we want to show you what we do and how we do it.
