Mackenzie's Softball Team

The Mackenzie slow pitch softball team is doing surprisingly well this season. With a six and four record this season so far, according to team captain Ty Kirchhofer, we're on a winning streak.

“We are just good enough to be entertaining,” Ty says. “We're good enough to beat the other engineering firms, but not good enough to beat the contractors.”

Every year for over a decade, Mackenzie’s Portland and Vancouver teams field a slow pitch softball team. We play in a league against Portland-area Engineering, Architecture, and Construction firms.

“I think once a season, there's always someone that makes a play or a catch that they have no business making, and they're the most shocked out of everyone else,” Ty Kirchhoffer said at Mackenzie’s game against Scott Edward Architects.

“Like Davin, one of our interns in structural, has never played softball in his life. He made an incredible catch a few weeks ago that he was shocked, like his face. He was the most surprised out of everybody.”

Ty said the team likes to have a 50/50 blend of people who’ve played before and know what they're doing and the other half people that have no idea what they're doing, “Because it keeps it entertaining for the rest of us."

“My favorite part? There is a lot, but I get to interact with a lot of people that I would have no business talking to in the office. Specifically, a lot of the interns and the 20-somethings. It's super fun just to get to interact and get to know people in a fun way outside of work.”

If you come to watch our games, just park your car at least a block away from the field and maybe think about getting a face guard, because this season so far Ty says, “We've broken a windshield, and we've broken a nose of an opposing player with a foul ball.”
