Woodmont Natural Park is a place where the restoration of the park's natural ecologies converge to enable the restoration of the soul.

Beginning with a shared vision to better connect people to the outdoors, the project team engaged the community through an eight month process to generate a master plan for the park. The beloved property was beset by access and visibility issues and hundreds of invasive trees. Through several meetings with stakeholder groups and the community, several design alternatives were produced, critiqued, and adapted to arrive at a collectively appreciated master plan.

Building on the success of the master plan process, Mackenzie was contracted again to carry the design to completion and gain approvals and permits across multiple agencies. To ensure the successful execution of a variety of unique, nature-based concepts, Mackenzie worked closely with the contractors during construction to explain the intent and craft of elements that make the park special - like the repurposed walnut tree and the “bird’s nest."

DESIGN DRIVERS

Distinct areas were identified in the master plan —flexible open space, an oak savanna, forested areas, wetlands, and an open meadow - as priority areas for ecological enhancement and enjoyment.

Soft surface trails throughout the park link the distinct ecosystems together and provide users a way to engage with nature throughout the entire park.
Emphasis was placed on the removal of invasive species and the renaturalization of distinct native plant communities. Nearly two hundred native trees were planted.
Creative reuse of existing materials and site assets enabled areas for play, discovery, and rest.
